NIO Launches Fifth ET5 Production Model On NIO Day 2021

Shanghai (Gasgou) – On December 18, 2021, Chinese electric vehicle startup NIO launched its fifth mass-produced model and also its second sedan, the ET5, on NIO Day 2021, its biggest event of the year.

At the event, the company officially started pre-ordering the recently unveiled model and said the model is expected to ship from September next year. For customers who buy the car with battery, the pre-subsidy price of the ET5 is 328,000 yuan ($ 51,450) for the version with 75 kWh battery and 386,000 yuan ($ 60,550) for the 100 kWh version. Users who choose the BaaS solution will purchase the car for 258,000 yuan ($ 40,470), while paying an additional charge for the battery rental service on a monthly basis.

Positioned as a mid-size sedan, the NIO ET5 is 4,790mm long, 1,960mm wide, 1,499mm high and has a wheelbase of 2,888mm.

The startup said the ET5’s exterior design embodies NIO’s supercar DNA. The model’s young and dynamic image is accentuated by the muscular hips, which are inspired by the EP9 supercar, the crisp pleats and the flowing silhouette inherited from the ET7. The ET5 also reflects the concept of “Design for AD” as it seamlessly integrates autonomous driving sensors into its body lines.

The ET5 comes with nine exterior color palettes, of which Airspace Blue is the NIO color of 2022.

The interior of the new model captures six color options. The company said the ET5’s cabin uses durable Clean + fabric to create a soothing, cocooning vibe and improve acoustic performance. Thanks to the invisible air vents, the dashboard is neat and delicate. In addition, the entrance and existing will be comfortable with the soft-close doors with frameless windows and flush door handles, as well as the UWB digital key.

At the ET5 launch ceremony, William Bin Li, CEO of NIO, presented the PanoCinema, a panoramic and immersive digital cockpit with AR and VR technologies. The cockpit will create an exclusive interior space made possible by the all-new curtain mood lighting in 256 colors and the Dolby Atmos 7.1.4 surround sound system.

Meanwhile, NIO announced the launch of AR glasses it co-developed with device company AR NREAL, and NIO VR glasses developed in cooperation with Nolo. Exclusives of the ET5, the AR glasses weigh only 76 g. The VR glasses, with ultra-thin pancake lenses, can achieve 4K binocular display effect.

According to William Bin Li, the entire range of the NIO ET5 will come standard with the NIO Aquila Super Sensing and the NIO Adam Super Computing. The latest NIO Autonomous Driving (NAD) will also be applied in ET5, and its full functionality will be phased out after validation of development.

The NIO ET5 can go from 0 to 100 km / h in 4.3 seconds and has a 100 to 0 km / h braking distance of 33.9 meters. Its drag coefficient is only 0.24. Carrying an electric powertrain powered by an SiC power module, the ET5 has a CLTC range of 500 km with a 75 kWh battery, over 700 km with a 100 kWh battery and over 1,000 km with a 150 kWh battery.

In addition to the ET5 unveiling, NIO has claimed that the ET7, the company’s first sedan model, will be available for delivery starting March 28 next year.

Regarding the construction of NIO’s power grid, the startup said it has deployed today 733 battery swap stations, 3,348 destination chargers, 3,136 super chargers and has access to 440,000 third-party chargers.

By the end of 2022, NIO aims to have a total of more than 1,300 Power Swap stations, 6,000 Super Chargers and 10,000 destination chargers across China.

After entering the Norwegian market this year, NIO plans to introduce its products and services in Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden and Denmark in 2022. Its commercial deployment is expected to cover more than 25 countries and regions around the world. ‘by 2025.
