The Jacksonville Jaguars are a young team full of strengths. There’s no doubt their rookie class will have an immediate impact, but there are also several sophomores who are set to become key contributors in the 2021 season. One of them is wide receiver Laviska Shenault Jr. , which showed flashes in 2020 and is ready to take the next step.
Nate Burleson of NFL Media recently made a list of wide receivers set for a Year 2 breakout in 2021 and Viska was among those who made the cut. Here’s what Burleson had to say about the Jaguars second-year catcher:
Shenault brings so much to the Jaguars offense as a physical wide receiver and slippery ball carrier. One of the few offensive bright spots in 2020, he feels like his light will be bigger and brighter after focusing on his health, mentality and craftsmanship during the offseason. If this hungry young wide receiver can quickly gain the confidence of overall first pick Trevor Lawrence, Shenault should easily grow his rookie production.
This is not the first time that Burleson has complimented “Shenaughty by Nature”. A few months ago, he made a list of five wide receivers that will come out in the 2021 season and Shenault took the top spot. In appreciation, the Jaguars catcher thanked Burleson and congratulated him on winning the Sports Emmy Award for Outstanding Sports Personality.
The Jacksonville Jaguars are due to hand the ball over to Laviska Shenault in 2021.
The Jaguars should be fun to watch in 2021. Last season they struggled to reach the end zone and finished 30th in points scored. That should change this coming season. In addition to drafting quarterback Trevor Lawrence with the No. 1 pick in the draft, they signed wide receiver Marvin Jones Jr. in free agency. In addition, they have added drafted running back Travis Etienne, who will have a big role in the passing game. Jacksonville has more than enough guns to score more often.
DJ Chark will be the Jaguars’ best reception option and Jones will most likely enter the 2021 season as number two. Still, Shenault should get his fair share of targets. He’s had a pretty solid training camp and Lawrence has hooked up with him for several big games. The 2020 second-round pick also received praise from his teammates. Jones told local media the runner-up has abilities that no one else in the NFL has, while running back James Robinson believes he looks faster and stronger than last year.
The fact that Lawrence is now at the helm should help Shenault be more productive in 2021. Last season the Jaguars lacked stability at the quarterback and players in a skill position saw their production drop as a result. While the Clemson product has yet to make its NFL debut, its presence should give the offense a boost. He should have no trouble passing the ball to his receivers.
Shenault is implementing the necessary work to be successful in the NFL. It is telling that the national media and the Jacksonville Jaguars organization have taken notice. At this point, it seems inevitable that the sophomore wide receiver will excel in 2021.
